Enyimba, a team with a history of championship wins, has been eliminated from the CAF Champions League after a goalless draw against Al Ahli Benghazi from Libya.
Despite being referred to as the “People’s Elephants,” Enyimba needed a two-goal lead to progress to the next round of the competition following a 3-4 loss in the initial leg of the match.
Unfortunately, Coach George Finidi’s team couldn’t secure the required goals as they played to a draw at the Enyimba Stadium in Aba on Sunday.
This marks the first instance since 2015 that the Nigerian champions have been knocked out in the preliminary round of the tournament, a competition they have clinched twice. Enyimba remains the sole club from Nigeria to have achieved this feat.
Notably, Enyimba’s exit comes shortly after Bendel Insurance advanced to the subsequent stage of the CAF Confederation Cup, triumphing over Aso Chlef in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in the two-legged tie.
